recovery disk full (can't backup) 0x80070070

Keep getting warnings that my recovery disk is full, but no suggestions about
what to do.
Tried to back up to DVD but refuses to do it. "A Shaddow copy could not be
created because not enough space on disk (0x80070070)
I see I'm not the only one with backup problems - Are microsoft doing
anything about this?
Untill I can fix the backup - my data is at risk. Has anybody got any
suggestions?

It would be best to invest in a good external drive for backups.
