Recurrent error 80070002 on 7 updates

The 7 latest updates for my system (Vista for Business and Office 2007) are
failing to install and I'm repeatedly getting error code 80070002.

I've tried the fixes recommended by Help and in MS Knowledge Base - ie
clearing/renaming SoftwareDistribution folders - to no avail. It's a very
frustrating situation.

Any suggestions please?

Apologies if I've missed the solution elsewhere in the forum. I can see
that others have had similar problems, but I cannot identify the fix.

My problems with Update began after restoring to an earlier backup after a
crash. More or less everything now appears to be working normally again,
apart from Windows Update.

Advice from forum experts would be much appreciated.

(Footnote: Updates are 905866 (Update Junk E-mail filter), 943899 (Update
Vista), 946456 (Security Update Vista), 943302 (Update Vista), 943055
(Security Update Vista), 944533 (Cumulative IE7 Security Update for Vista),
938371 (Update Vista)).

I have had the same problem for several months and have tried every fix I've
found; as a result a few would install. I have, however, 8
important/recommended ones that won't install. My question, to add to
"Scotch's" is - with SP1 coming out in the next few days, will we have a
problem installing it? - and/or will it be a possible fix for the updates
that won't install. HELP! - any information would be appreciated

Just to let everyone know that, after fiddling about for hours with various
kinds of suggested fixes for this, including suggestions from Support, I
decided to cut my losses and do a full restore of my system to a date in
February which was before the problem started occurring.

Previously, after the computer crash which started it all (apparently caused
by an incorrect shutdown), I had only done a 'partial restore' to the same
date, using the Rescue & Recovery software which came with my laptop, which
is supposed to fix system files and settings but leave personal files alone.
It was in this state that the 80070002 problem was persisting, so evidently
it hadn't quite done its stuff properly.

For I found that the full restore was the only thing which did the trick and
allowed Windows Update to start working again and to download updates
normally to the present date. The computer is now fully up to date again and
appears - let's hope - to be working well.

It looks as if corrupted system or registry files, even after doing the
partial restore, somehow cause the 80070002 error to occur - perhaps the
update sequence gets itself 'out of synch' and can't work correctly any more.

It's obvious from many Internet forums that a lot of people are spending a
lot of time unsuccessfully trying various ways to get rid of the 80070002,
including officially recommended methods. Might be worth trying if possible
to do a full restore of your system to the last backup date when it was
working properly...

Hope this helps.

Cheers
