recurring high pitched sound problem

hoping you good folks can help...
when playing back music or watching video clip a high pitched sound disturbs
playback, it happens every 18 seconds, it starts in the left (built-in)
speaker but affects both. if i use earphones the problems still occurs
described.
i have no conflicts on system running Windows XP, though trying to access
ALi sight to attempts updating drivers has proven tricky.

please help with suggestions
