Recurring Update, No Matter How Many Times I Install

Running WinXP Tablet Edition, SP2. I've installed KB890530 countless
times, and both Automatic Update and Windows Update tell me it needs to
be installed. The history, however, (below) reports that it has been
successfully installed multiple times.

I've tried clearing IE's cache. And the profile's temp directory. And
I looked in Add/Remove Programs for KB890830 with hopes of removing it,
but it's not there to remove.

Any ideas? One of the suggestions at this MS support link
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=193385) suggests disabling
anti-virus and firewall before running windows update, but that's an
absolute last resort in my mind.

Has this behavior occurred previously, i.e. the MSRT downloading again
and again ?
It is safe to temp disable the installed AV while the system is online
and is doing an Automatic Update, especially if it *may* be interfering
with the MSRT scan.
The scan results can be viewed by opening the mrt.log located in
WINDOWS\debug.
Perhaps that would provide a clue.
