Red circle with white cross + ? in update list

When I see the list of updates some are marked "Installation failed".
Automatic update shows that no updates are needed.
Can I make Windows find the failed updates - that is can I remove the icons
so that WU can find the updates that are not Installed, thus automatic
Install them (There are quit a few). I now I can do it manually, but it would
be easier as descibed.
