After spending 3 hours on the phone having tech support help me download SP3
for my XP home edition, the red "failed update" icon, of all things, has
stopped working when clicked on. It's makin' me nuts!

Any error messages? What does your WindowsUpdate.log have to say about all
this? Did you call tech support back?

1) When attempting some updates off the web using IE7, got the "HTTP 403"
error message and the "object blocked" message using Mozilla Firefox.
2)Don't know, but the mgr from the update team tried and tried but could not
get the icon to respond. Finally told me to call back and ask the IE7 team
for help.
3) Yes-spent 2 more hours and still no success. Changed all the pop-up
settings as well. Tech support tried to help-they even used the EA feature to
gain control of my computer.

Have you actually tried manually downloading the full file and installing?

You, with all due respect, gotta be kiddin'! Just to get those red icons to
work and get rid of the HTTP 403 messages? Geez Louise-there's not an easier
fix?

Not too sure about the red "failed update" problem.

However, if we are talking about downloading rather than installing, I
had similar problems. I found that there was a conflict with Spybot S&D
(immunisation) and SpywareBlaster.

If you have either of these programs (or other "real time protection"),
undo Spybot's immunisation and disable SpywareBlaster protection.

See TaurArian's links.

Also (if you manage to download successfully), when installing, SP3
needs sufficient space for it to create a restore point. Disable SR,
reboot, re-enable before installing.

Back up, please: Did WinXP SP3 install successfully or not? Where is this
"red 'Failed update' icon" you're referring to located (e.g., in Update
History at Windows Update website)? What update(s) "failed [to install]"
and when?

Did you even look at WindowsUpdate.log for errors associated with this
"failed" update?

How to read the WindowsUpdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

What "updates off the web" are you referring to? Are you referring to
Windows Update website (again)? Is Automatic Updates enabled?

Is your problem really about IE7? If so, did you install IE7 when you were
running WinXP SP2 or after you'd installed WinXP SP3?

Where is this "red 'Failed update' icon" you're referring to located (e.g.,
in Update
History at Windows Update website)? That's exactly where it is.

What update(s) "failed [to install]" and when? CCLEANER for example won't
even download at all now.

Did you even look at WindowsUpdate.log for errors associated with this
"failed" update?
