red x icons gone

We have two IBM Thinkpad laptops, windows 2000 SP4. I noticed when I went to
intall a printer, that the printer folder had a small square with a red x in
it - no printer icons, no add printer icon.

I then checked control panel - same problem, no icons, just the red x.

Then I went into Explorer, double click any file, nothing shows up in the
right pane except for the red x. All programs work fine, printer works okay,
just can't see any icons.

I then went to Windows update to check what patches had been loaded recently
in history, it told me Active X had to be installed, but it was installed two
weeks ago, and working fine.

Is this caused by a patch, if so which one and is there a fix or do I have
to uninstall the offending patch and try reinstall it?

Thanks in advance.

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that origin from MS Support, and it has fixed the ActiveX problem
for several people, getting this problem after installing KB896688):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

See also the new released KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909738
which is referred to *now* in the revised Security Bulletin 05-052.

Freudi

Oerks, I ment to link to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909889/en-us :-/
The REG file mentioned in there is *identical* to the OLEfix.zip file
I reffered to earlier.
