Red "X" on network icon?

Hi,
A couple of days ago the red "X" on the network computer icon in the task
bar stays on when I connected to the internet or not. I have a dialup
connection. If I place the mouse on the icon it states NOT connected even
when I am connected. If I right click on the icon and select connect to a
network the connect window comes up with my dial up connection highlighted
and marked as connected.
I have Vista home premium and IE 7.
Can someone tell me how to get the red X to go away when I'm connected.
Being on dial up this is a pain.
Thanks,

you probably have an ethernet card you are not using (the connectio
looks very similar to the phone line connection). look around in th
settings for the ethernet card for an option to show/hide the icon i
the system tray area

Nice try, I am hooked to IE via Ethernet and I get red X sometimes while I
am connected or not. Same with mail. Also many times while using MS mail I
get a small pop up window saying I'm off line when I'm not. Go figure...
Isn't Vista great?

Vista has some half-assed way to check to see if you are connected
and/or connected to the internet. I've yet to see anyone describe the
actual parameters it uses. It's a well known glitch to see the X
and/or "connected only locally" when your connection is just fine.
