Red X on tray internet connection monitor

I have a red X on the system tray internet connection monitors. I am
connected and online but the lights do not flash either. I am using a Dell
E521. My Dell E520 with XP does not have this issue and is connected to
same home network.

The red X should be there if you are not connected to your network. When you
are connected to Local only, the red X goes away and you see two blue
monitors. When you are connected to Local and Internet there should be a
blue globe under the monitors. Click on the monitors and select Network &
Sharing to see the details of your connection.
