reformat windows xp?

i have created a 'backup' file of all the contents on my computer saved to c:
drive.

i now want to reinstall the windows xp operating system.

i insert my windows xp operation disk and select install windows xp.

however i receive a message saying:

windows setup: the option to upgrade will not be available at this time
because setup was unable to load the file D:\i386\WINNTUPG\NETUPGRD.DLL
the system cannot find the specified file.

my only option is the new installation (advanced).

my question is:

will existing files be lost (ie. my backup file) if i select the new
installation setup?

any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
