Refuses to start up after update

I recently ran updates on my computer running xp professional and now it
refuses to start up completely. I see the first screen where it says winxp
and then it will do one of two things. it will sit there like that until I
shut it off or it will go to a black screen and stay there. My computer did
not come with a floppy so I can't use the ASR. Any ideas on what I could do
to get it running again before I put my foot through it and use it as a door
stop?

Safe Mode, System Restore.
