Regedit Window won't stay open

I am having trouble installing Window xp SP2. According to the
troubleshooter, I need to modify my registry keys. I typed regedit in the
Program, Run, the registry tree window flashed through my computer screen,
but it won't stay open for me to do anything. Any suggestion will be greatly
appreciated.

Reboot- restart your pc in SAFE mode. Then run Regedit.
Urge you to also do an antivirus check while in Safe Mode.

Prior to trying to install SP2, did you make sure your
system was clean of spyware and viruses. I think you most
likely have a virus.
