Registry problems

I am unable to load any programs after a major crash of Vista Home Premium.

What do you mean by "major crash in Vista"?

The system just closed down while I was loading a new program with the blue
screen error 0x0000008e.
When I restarted I found that some programs would no longer run, the message
each time was that windows hod found a problem and was going to close the
program. It then crashed with a blue screen and error stop oxoooooo8e.
I tried, located and deleted all of the programs that caused this problem.
I then tried to do a restore but found that the only restore point available
was the one just before the system closed down for the first time. no other
estore points were available.
All other programs that are left still work ok.

Most likely that was a driver issue then since STOP 0x8E is a kernel mode
exception not handled. The best way to troubleshoot it would be to send us
the dump, but that would require you to open a case.

Thanks for your help Joseph,
But this site seems to be for commercial users, not for a home user like me.
It seems that the only thing I can do is do a clean reload of Vista and hope
for the best.
If it happens again I will probably go back to XP which I found to be very
resiliant.

I have had my Vista for over 90 days so rather than spend £50.00 or so for
help I will reload and hope for the best.
I had hoped that someone might have had a suggestion as to why when loading
programs they cannot write to the registry.

It's often due to an antivirus program. Which if any such programs do
you have?
