have two computers that I was trying to apply the lastest patches and
updates on. One was fresh out of the box. After I apllied all the latest
updates and restarted each computer, now they both get a pop up box saying
"one of the files containing the system's registry data had to be recovered
by a log or alternate copy. The Recovery was successful". One of the
computers had been in use for along time and never had any problems until I
installed the last two updates that were available on windows update. (kb
841533, and Kb840987). The second computer ,as I said, was fresh out of the
box, and had to have all the udpates applied...which I did over a period of
days. No errors appeared until yesterday when I udpated the other computer.
..It had several more updates other than the ones mentioned above. I tried
uninstalling the updates above. The error went away ..so I thought. Then
it came back again after a few re-boots. I looked all across the web and
found a few references to this "popup box" , but no one seems to have a
definitive answer to what reall is causing it. I havent found any mentioned
to it being associated with a windows update issue, but that is the commone
link between these two computers. Has any one else out there come across
this? thanks in advance.

Installing Service Pack 2 fixes the problem, but I can not install SP2 to all
my computers at this time. If anybody has another solution please let us
know.
Thank you.

Hi guys

Uninstalling KB840987 seems to have done the trick for me. Not ideal, but
I'm not in a position to roll out SP2 to clients just now, so it's preferable
to having users phone me up every ten minutes complaining about the error.

Cheers

Symptom:

XP Users complaining of an error popup message on the Desktop which
indicates that a problem was found with the registry and that it has
been recovered. This messages seems to only appear when a users logs
onto their computer but not when a user unlocks the system to resume
their work.

Event Log message recorded:

Event ID 26: Source: Application popup: Windows - Registry Recovery :
One of the files containing the system's Registry data had to be
recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was
successful.

It has been observed the neither performance of the OS or the
functionality of mainstream applications are compromised by this
occurrence.

Cause:

An XP operating system executes a Windows Update (either manually via
the web or automated through the SUS server) When the security update
KB840987 is installed and subsequently the computer is rebooted this
causes the error message to appear once the user logs in to their
system.

Mitigations:

Uninstall Windows Security Update KB840987
(http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS04-032.mspx)
However, this leaves the system exposed to the vulnerabilities (4
listed in the bulletin). In addition, uninstalling this patch will
cause Windows Security Update KB841533
(http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS04-031.mspx) to
be uninstalled as well. However, a workaround would be to disable the
NetDDE service. This service allows two applications to communicate
via the network. It's an older OS mechanism probably for applications
that cannot leverage the DCOM service which is the new method that is
used for this purpose.

Or

Install XP SP2

Or

Live w/ this error and remain protected against these vulnerabilities.
