0x80070005 is a standard Windows error code, meaning "Access Denied".
I've never hard of AlternaTIFF before, but the MIE website was easy to find.
AlternaTIFF doesn't come with an Installer (such as an MSI file) which uses
the Windows Installer Service. If you try to install an MSI package and you
don't have the necessary permissions to complete the installation, Vista
will prompt you to be "elevated" to the necessary privilege level.
AlternaTIFF is installed with just a batch file; so, it cannot request the
appropriate elevation of privileges needed to complete the installation.
Instead, it fails with an "access denied" error.
That would be a bit lame, except that AlternaTIFF is free, and as MIE state
on the website, it's free because they assume the user has the technical
knowhow to install and use the tool, without fancy hand-holding and
expensive support options.
To work around the "access denied" 0x80070005 error, do this:
- first, make sure you have the latest AlternaTIFF version 1.8.3, dated 28
Jun 2007. This contains important fixes for Vista.
- find the Command Prompt icon in Start Menu
- right-click Command Prompt and choose "Run as Administrator"
- give your consent or admin password, when prompted.
- you will now be at a Administrative command prompt.
- change directory to the location of the alttiff.ocx file
- run the command "regsvr32 alttiff.ocx". For example:
C:\Program Files\AlternaTIFF>regsvr32 alttiff.ocx
- You should get a message that the file has been successfully registered.
- type "exit" to close the command prompt.
You should now be ready to use AlternaTIFF.
If that doesn't get you up and running, you may need to study MIE's FAQ and
Readme notes; and possibly email their support address. Or, if you need this
application for your work, maybe the IT guys at your place can give you a
hand.
Anyway, I hope this gets you up and running.
