I have several failed installs when viewing installation history. I've
tried to install a few of them but always am told that a more current version
exists and to go to windows update and scan for updates. Well, I've got the
new update screen now and update takes me to it, not the old scan for updates
page. So, can I safely install SP2 without the prior failed (all this month)
updates? Thanks.

P.S. Also, one of the failed updates I mentioned in this post was SP2: It
says it was "cancelled" but I'm not aware of cancelling it. Can I assume
that I was scheduled for SP2 update and should go ahead and do a manual
install rather than wait for another automatic update?

The failed updates will not be a problem for SP-2.

You can leave it at Automatic Update if you want and see if SP-2
installs.
Or you can install SP-2 this way:
