reinstall SBS 2003

I have a server with a new customer. Its SBS2003 sp2 and was installed in
2004, with exchange and MSSQL. There are several major apps and many smaller
3rd party apps that connect frequently to provide medical data every day.
There are over 12 clients and they can't afford to be down in business hours.
It also mates with a terminal server acting as the license server.

It has gradually degraded in small ways, monitoring and reporting have
failed, some controls have failed and the MMC is sick. I have tried a few
fixes etc but it seems it is a bit of a mess now. I suspect some registry
entries may be missing or corrupt. I also want to make it a RAID system as it
is a single drive right now.

I was thinking a reinstall of the OS. I will do a full blue metal backup
ready in case. I want a reinstall as I do not want to spend days getting the
many 3rd party vendors to set up their apps again. It was hard enough the
first time. This would also hold up the business and their patients for some
time - not a happy customer if I do that!! Believe me!

What is required for a reinstall, like can be done in XP etc where all apps,
settings etc are retailed? Or is there another way to clean up the OS?

I hope to carry out the work this weekend if possible!

Barry

You might consider a swing migration from SBS 2003 back to SBS 2003
(www.sbsmigration.com). It is well worth the cost for the detailed
instructions and support you get.

I forgot to add accessing maintenance through Add/remove - SBS Windows 2003 -
change/remove... this fails after the SBS Setup window appears and I click
Next. It just dissapears and nothing happens. As I said MMC is not well and I
can't access the Server Management etc.

As SteveB has said, a Swing migration is your best bet, but that will
entail setting up all your thrid party apps from scratch.

Thanks guys but it isn't on to do reinstalls of apps unless a couple of days
or more are allowed. Customer won't go for that without a fight. BUT I got on
site and did a big check and found IE8 and it was causing instability and
problems. I have removed it and it came back to IE7. Now all is working fine
but I have an itch that tells me IE6 was the basis for SBS2003 and IE7 might
even cause some issues but so far its OK.

The only thing is that Monitoring has been down for some time and hasn't
recovered so I ran the usual reinstall for that but it failed. If you have
any insites to this issue I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again.

Yes, SBS 2003 (and R2 versions) originally came IE 6. I normally keep SBS
2003 at IE6 since the server is not used for browsing.
