Reinstall - update not working

Hi:

Had to reinstall windows XP from recovery disks. Tried to use Windows
Update but the web page sits there with: "Checking for the latest version
of the Windows Update software..." displayed. I let it sit for 10 minutes
or more.

So, I downloaded and ran Microsoft baseline security analyzer which tells me
I have a billion and a half security holes and need to run Windows Update.
Well, again, the update page just sits there with nothing happening.

What can I do to have windows update let me download the security patches
individually? There is no way I am going to download SP2 at this time.

Honestly, thanks for your help. I quite technical so don't hold back.
