If it were my system, I'd uninstall SP2 from Add/Remove Programs first.
Then I'd read :

Best to see how issues can be avoided then to have do a format and
reinstall of XP.
After SP2 installs successfully, then I'd slipstream it with the XP CD
so that in the event of having to reinstall XP again, SP2 would not have
to be installed again (or, when utilizing sfc/ scannow) :
