reinstalled xp..hangs at windows update

I had to reformat and reinstall xp today after a crash...trying to go to
windows update and the application hangs every single time...tried at least
30 times...any suggestions?

you can rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download to
c:\WINDOXP\SoftwareDistribution\Download.old and all updates will be
downloaded and applied again.

thanks..stupid question tho..how do i rename a file..do I go into command
prompt or safe mode?

oh, the extra precautions of safe mode/ command prompt aren't really
necessary. all you have to do is go to Start>Run>Type in
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution. A window will come up with somefolders,
just right click the one name "download" and hit "rename." You can rename it
to anything...Download.old is just a suggestion. Then automatic update will
redownload and apply the patches.
