I recently re-installed Windows XP Home. I now find I have Explorer 5 and
have not been able to update to Explorer 7. Before the re-install I was using
Explorer 7. Can I update directly to IE7?

Kafka again.

On checking I find I have IE6 SP1 but cannot update to SP2 or Explorer 7. I
have Windows XP Version 5.1 (this was on the disk I used to re-install
Windows).

Could you explain the problem you're having with updating to SP2 so that you can get more
assistance on this issue.

Why did you reinstall Windows?

Did you format & reinstall or do a Repair Install?

How to perform a repair installation of Windows XP if Internet Explorer 7 is
installed:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964

You must be running WinXP SP2 to install IE7.

Why did I reinstall Windows? I found that my PC was freezing a few minutes
after opening Windows. A short time before the problem arose I had installed
various Comodo security programs and I thought that they might have corrupted
Windows (I am rather ignorant when it comes to such things). I therefore
reinstalled XP from the original disk. A computer technician told me that my
six year old hard drive was probably defunct. To cut a long story short, I
eventually discovered that the problem had arisen because I had plugged my
new Microsoft Multimedia Wireless and Mouse into the second USB socket. Once
I had plugged it into a spare port on my 4 port USB hub the problem was
solved (though my defragmenter revealed that C drive was shockingly
fragmented).

It appears that I now have IE6 Service Pack 1, and I have been unable to
update to Service Pack 2. I ran winver and discovered that my WinXP was SP1
(specifically Version 5.1, Service Pack 1).

NOTE: before reinstalling Windows I was using IE7, which is a bit puzzling.

ALSO: Windows Update tells me that I am not up to date, but when I try and
install all the files it requires as important I am informed that the
installations were unsuccessful.

PA Bear,

I followed your instructions however while the installation of SP2 was in
progress I received a message telling me that I had to uninstell IE7 before
continuing. I was a bit surprised as the whole problem was that I didn't have
IE7, however I found it and attempted to uninstall it. Someway through the
process I received a message advising that IE had encountered a problem and
was closing down. Since that time I have been unable to boot up (even from
the original XP disk). Any attempt I make to reinstall XP from the original
disk elicits the last-mentioned message. As a matter of desperation I decided
to reformat C: (via Windows Task Manager, which is about the only thing that
works). Unfortunately I can't even do that as C: contains XP. I guess the
easiest thing to do would be to buy a new PC (mine is six years old).

Thanks for your help

Take the machine and its WinXP CD to a local, reputable and independent shop
(/not/ BigBoxStore USA). Have them backup your personal data then format &
reinstall Windows.

Good luck.
