I am looking for a reliable way to synchronize the store folder of WLM 2011
on different computers.

The contacts (and calendar) are somehow synchronized automatically when
logged into any live mail account,
as i understand it.

But my problem is that i use WLM on more than 2 computers and sometimes i
use the computers via remote desktop.

Until now i synchronized manually by sorting emails in the store folder by
date
and then copying them to a windows folder and back again on the other
computer.

Is there any reliable way to synchronize large amounts of locally stored
emails?

greetings

No, not "locally stored". Synchronization requires remote storage on a
server; i.e., putting your data in "the cloud". This is how the calendar is
kept in synch. If you have an HTTPMail account (@hotmail.com, @live.com,
@msn.com, or one of the co-branded MSN services (Verizon and Qwest that I
know of)), or an IMAP account (AIM/AOL Mail, Gmail and some others), you can
synch email because they keep the email on their servers.

If you are comfortable with setting up a mail server on your network, there
are at least two Windows-based email server applications which will allow
you to set up a local IMAP service. I use Mercury Mail for this; though I am
running it on a Windows XP computer.

Other than using a third party email service which offers IMAP service, or
running your own IMAP email server, there is no easy way (that I know of) to
synchronize email; especially locally stored email.

It should be possible to sync your mail store across PCs using Dropbox. With
a free Dropbox account and you are given a 2gB storage allowance.

Before you try this approach you should backup your mail store (everything
WLM related, including accounts) in such a way that you can restore it if
necessary.

Caveat... This is not for the feint-hearted. I've not done this with WLM,
however, I do share databases across Dropbox for another program. So far,
I've had no problems. Still I backup my database daily.

After you've installed Dropbox on your primary machine, move you mail store
(using WLM) to the Dropbox folder. After your mail store has been moved to
your local Dropbox folder, it will replicate with the Dropbox cloud server.

When that replication is complete, install Dropbox on your secondary
machine. Your mail store will then replicate down to your secondary PC.

The trick here is to point your secondary WLM to the appropriate Dropbox
folder. You'll have to do this through the registry, because, if you tell
WLM on the secondary PC to move its mail store, you risk overwriting all
that you had saved from your primary PC (that's why we made the backup
earlier).

To point the secondary copy of WLM to the Dropbox folder, open regedit
export the registry entry from the primary PC and add it to the secondary PC
registry.

HKEY_CU\Software\Windows Live Mail ...right-click the Windows Live Mail
"folder" for this key, and Export. Then add this reg file to the secondary
PC. After the mail store is fully-updated on the secondary PC. You can open
WLM.

Caution: If you make simultaneous changes on individual systems, you'll want
to read this:
https://www.dropbox.com/help/36

Finally... I've laid out the essence of how this could work. You need to
verify the steps to your complete satisfaction. if you completely hose your
WLM database, you need to be prepared to recover it on your own.

Using remote desktop to access WLM from one PC to another seems like a less
error-prone approach. What advantage do you see for wanting to share your
mail store across systems?

Pointing Windows Live Mail to a non-local storage medium is asking for
disaster. Getting a Gmail account (which offers IMAP service) would be much
safer!

Thanks for the information and that idea.
Sometimes with WLM there are still indexing problems with the local store
folder
so i assume that this might get worse when having the mail store pointing to
something
not local however.
Also, i do have accounts like googleMail and i use IMAP instead of POP3 on
some accouunts
but generally i thought that syncing the local store might be easier.

However i understand that it is not so easy. I will however try Dropbox on
a WLM user
with a smaller local store ... to see how it works.

tnx.

That's not what's happening. You are pointing it to a local storage media.
The files reside on your hard drive and are synced to other drives drives
via a cloud server. This is how IMAP works in effect.
