Just went through this ... when you said you reloaded Windows XP to SP1, did
you reformat and install, or did you REPAIR using the Windows XP
installation disk?
If you used REPAIR, I spent nearly a week REPAIRING Windows XP REPAIR. It
is not precise, leaves some registering of DLLs out, replaces some apps to
previous levels ... causing problems in the supporting DLLs.
One thing that is replaced is Windows Installer 3.1. These sort of puts the
system in a Catch-22 because you need Windows Installer 3.1 for Updates, but
how can you update Windows Installer to 3.1 if you can't update?
If the problem is Windows Installer 3.1, you need to uninstall Windows
Installer 3.1. First, download the Windows Installer 3.1 package (.exe
file). Then Add/Remove Windows Installer 3.1. The run the package.
I believe there are a bunch of reboots in there.
You may also have to re-register the Windows Update or Microsoft Update
support DLLs. And I would remove the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
folder. Since you are basically starting over.
Since you went back to SP1, do you have SP2 on disk or saved off somewhere.
If so, I would install that first.
Many of your problems will disappear since you will be putting back most of
the things removed.
