Remote access recurrent disconnection

I have an IBM server where win 2003 SBS premium R2 edition is installed. I
have configured 5 of my users as mobile users so that they can connect
remotely to check their email/work with files. I have also configured
Exchange pop3 to connect directly to my hosting email company and download
all emails and then directly send to the users' mailbox.

I have now configured dynamic DNS as here in Mauritius we do not have the
fixed IP address over ADSL. My dynamic address is xxx.dyndns.org/remote and
this is the address we use to connect remotely to our server to retrieve
email via outlook over internet or work remotely on our file server.

The problem is that very often, the users cannot get access remotely and I
need to run the "configure internet and email wizard" which is available to
configure remote access where I need to select the VPN, remote email, etc
options. This problem is being recurrent now and today I had to run the
routing and remote access wizard three times. I know that it is because the
IP address changes and I need to have a fixed IP over frame relay. But here
it is too expensive to implement such communication link.

Can anyone help?? Thanks

ps:No errors are reported in event viewer.

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that your RWW and VPN remote
access recurrent disconnect for your dynamic IP address. If I have
misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, since you have dynamic DNS, we can try to use DDNS
name replace IP address when you run the CEICW. On the client side, ensure
the client uses DDNS name to access RWW and VPN.

I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can resolve this issue:

Step 1: RWW
Please open Server Management console, navigate to 'To Do List' and click
'Connect to the internet' in the right panel. The wizard can help us
configure the networking settings for a SBS server. It's strongly
recommended to use the wizard to configure the SBS server.

More info:
825763 How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server
2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763

This wizard will publish the RWW.

Detailed steps for your reference:

1. On the SBS 2003 Server open the Server Management console. Go to
Standard Management\To Do List.

2. Click the "Connect to the Internet" link.

3. When navigating to the Firewall page, select "Enable firewall" and click
Next (I suppose you have 2 network adapters in SBS 2003).

4. On the "Services Configuration" page, select all the items and then
click Next.

5. On the "Web Services Configuration" page, make sure "Allow access to the
entire Web site from the Internet" is selected. If you select "Allow access
to only the following Web site services from the Internet", make sure all
items are selected. Click Next.

6. On the "Web Server Certificate" page, choose to create a new Web server
certificate and then type the public FQDN that you will use to access RWW
(xxx.dyndns.org).

Important: please input your FQDN, but not IP address.

7. Go through the remaining steps.

After that the wizard will automatically publish the RWW for internet
access and create new server certificate for SSL.

Step 2: VPN

Before test VPN connection, we have to ensure the VPN setting on SBS and XP
client are correct. Go through the following steps:

1. Run Remote Access wizard on SBS

a) On the Small Business Server 2003-based server, click To Do List in the
left pane of the Server Management console.

b) Under Network Tasks, click Configure Remote Access.

c) Click Next, click Enable Remote Access, click to select the VPN Access
check box, and then click Next.

d) Type the fully qualified public domain name (FQDN) of your server, click
Next, and then click Finish.

Important: please input your FQDN, but not IP address.

e) When the wizard is completed, click Close.

2. Go to the client and establish the VPN connection to the SBS Server, you
can refer to this KB article for more information:

How to configure a VPN connection to your corporate network in Windows XP
Professional
http://support.microsoft.com/default...B;EN-US;305550

Then you can access RWW via https:// xxx.dyndns.org /remote/

Meanwhile, please ensure your DDNS can update with your IP change in time.
You can use nslookup command to test it. If you have problem of this
condition, please connect your DDNS provider.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

Thank you for your reply.

My VPN and RWW is already configured as you have described below.

Previously it was working fine and it was only after two weeks that when the
DDNS ip address from the ISP's side chages then I had to run the CEICW. As
from this Sunday I could not connect at all and then I had to restart the
server and rerun the CEICW for the remote access to work.
As from then every 3 hours I have to run this wizard for remote access to
work. I have checked for any errors in the event viewer or any intruders on
the server performance report but there is no such activity which has been
reported.

Kind regards
Manisha

Hello Manisha,

Thank you for kind update.

For your condition, I suggest you to rerun the CEICW through the following
steps:

1. If you have two network adapters on SBS and direct connection to
broadband with PPPoE:

a. On the Connection Type page, click Broadband, and then click Next.

b. On the Broadband Connection page, under My server uses, click A
connection that requires a user name and password (PPPoE), and then click
Next.

c. On the PPPoE Connection page, under PPPoE connection, click an existing
connection, or create a new connection.

d. Verify that the ISP user name and password match the information that
your IPS provided. Configure the static IP address if appropriate, and then
click Next. If your network connection to the Internet is disabled, the
Network Connection page appears. If the page does not appear, go to step e.
On the Network Connection page, configure the IP settings according to the
requirements of your ISP, and then click Next.

The network connection is now enabled.

e. On the Local Network Connection page, under Connection Name, click
Server Local Area Connection, and then click Next.

f. Complete the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard.

2. If you have two network adapters on SBS and manual router connection to
broadband

a. If you receive a dialog box that says that a UPnP router was detected
and you want to configure the router automatically, go to the "Two network
adapters - UPnP router connection to broadband" section.

b. Click No to the question "Do you want the wizard to configure the
router?"

c. On the Connection Type page, click Broadband, and then click Next.

d. On the Broadband Connection page, under My server uses, click A local
router device with an IP address, and then click Next.

e. On the Router Connection page, next to Preferred DNS server and
Alternate DNS server, type the IP addresses that are provided by your ISP.
In the Local IP address of router box, type the IP address of the router
that the server uses to connect to the router.

f. Click to clear the My server uses a single network connection for both
Internet access and the local network check box, and then click Next.

g. On the Network Connection, You must enable and configure the network
connection to your ISP page, under the Connection Name, click Network
Connection.

h. If your router provides DHCP, click Obtain an IP address automatically
(use DHCP). If your router does not provide DHCP, click Use the following
IP address, and then type the IP address and the subnet mask in accordance
with the router settings. The default gateway is the IP address of the
router.

i. Click Next.

The network connection is now enabled.

j. On the Network Connection, You must click the connection for your ISP
and local network page, click Network Connection under the ISP network
connection.

k. Under the Local network connection, click Server Local Area Connection,
and then click Next.

l. Complete the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard.

Meanwhile, please ensure your DDNS can update with your IP change in time.
You can use nslookup command to test it. If you have problem of this
condition, please connect your DDNS provider.

If the issue persists, please kindly help me collect some information for
further investigation:

1. Do you have route before your SBS?

2. Do you have one or two network adapters on your SBS?

3. Do you have fix or dynamic IP on your SBS external network adapter?

4. Do you get connection error only when the external IP changed?

5. Please let me know the detail steps you run the CEICW every time.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

Hello Terence,

Thank you for your reply.

I have followed the instructions below and the remote access works fine
without any disconnection. However there are several things I have noted:

1. Remote access is slow.
2. Internet connection is very slow internally and some of the website pages
are not displayed. You have to do a refresh, the it takes time to display
the web page.
3. In the event viewer, I get the following error message" A Demand Dial
connection to the remote interface Small Business Broadband Connection on
port PPPoE6-0 was successfully initiated but failed to complete successfully
because of the following error: The remote computer did not respond. For
further assistance, click More Info or search Help and Support Center for
this error number. "
4. In the security event log, I get two login errors: (a)

Logon Failure:
Reason: Unknown user name or bad password
User Name: dc2@tplus

Logon attempt by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0
Logon account: dc2@tplus

Error Code: 0xC0000064
5. I also get " Allocated Memory 3/20/2007 10:59 AM 1
A large amount of memory is committed to applications and processes.
Consistently high memory usage can cause performance problems.

To determine which processes and applications are using the most memory, use
Task Manager. Monitor the activity of these resources over a few days. If
they continue to use a high level of memory and are less critical processes
or services, try stopping and then restarting them.

You can disable this alert or change its threshold by using the Change Alert
Notifications task in the Server Management Monitoring and Reporting taskpad.

In reply to your questions:

1. Do you have route before your SBS? - Yes A netgear DG834GT which acts as
the firewall

> 2. Do you have one or two network adapters on your SBS? - Two internal network card
>
> 3. Do you have fix or dynamic IP on your SBS external network adapter?I have a fixed IP on both the netgear router modem and network cards on SBS server. Only dynamic IP on ISP's side and DDNS hosting company.

Apologies for replying after so many days. In fact I wanted to be sure that
the disconnection problem does not occur again.

Waiting for your reply.

Hello Manisha,

Thank you for kind update.

After you correct run the CEICW, I suggest you to run the Run Remote Access
wizard again:

Run Remote Access wizard on SBS

a) On the Small Business Server 2003-based server, click To Do List in the
left pane of the Server Management console.

b) Under Network Tasks, click Configure Remote Access.

c) Click Next, click Enable Remote Access, click to select the VPN Access
check box, and then click Next.

d) Type the fully qualified public domain name (FQDN) of your server, click
Next, and then click Finish.

Important: please input your FQDN, but not IP address.

e) When the wizard is completed, click Close.

For the performance issues:

Remote access is slow.
Internet connection is very slow
The remote computer did not respond
A large amount of memory is committed to applications and processes

I suggest you to connect your Internet service provider, to confirm the
bandwidth and stability of your Internet connection.
Meanwhile, many worm viruses will tie up network bandwidth and server
performance. I suggest you to install last antivirus software on whole
network, do full scan.

For the event log 529, it just means the VPN client enter incorrect
username or password when they try to set up VPN connection.

Please do not hesitate to let me know if this problem reoccurs or if
there's anything else I can do for you.

Thank you and have a nice day,

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

Hello Terence,

1. I always run the remote access wizard after completing the CEICW.
2.The remote and internet access were not slow before I changed the setting
to PPPoE. This morning, I changed the setting back that is using a local
router with fixed IP and the internet connection was fast and no
disconnection of web pages occurred. However I had to return the settings
back (PPPoE) as remote was not accessible.
3.For event 20111 remoteaccess you did not mention anything. After applying
the setting for PPPoE, I'm getting this error after every 5 mins.

4. In my netgear router configuration I can see the PPPoE but it is not set
on this one. Instead it is using PPPoA in the encapsulation settings. I
tried to change it to PPPoE to see if this will help but we cannot get
internet or remote access.

Please advise for further settings at your end.

Thanks

Regards
Manisha

Hello Manisha,

Thank you for kind update.

Base on my further research, I suggest that let's set PPPoE on your router
and use broadband connection settings on your SBS.

1. Use broadband connection settings on your SBS (You have two network
adapters on SBS and manual router connection to broadband)

a. On the SBS 2003 Server open the Server Management console. Go to
Standard Management\To Do List.

b. Click the "Connect to the Internet" link.

2. Set PPPoE on your router. For the detail steps please contact your
router vendor.

Note: you can input your user name and password provided by your ISP in
this step.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| Hello Terence,
|
| 1. I always run the remote access wizard after completing the CEICW.
| 2.The remote and internet access were not slow before I changed the
setting
| to PPPoE. This morning, I changed the setting back that is using a
local
| router with fixed IP and the internet connection was fast and no
| disconnection of web pages occurred. However I had to return the
settings
| back (PPPoE) as remote was not accessible.
| 3.For event 20111 remoteaccess you did not mention anything. After
applying
| the setting for PPPoE, I'm getting this error after every 5 mins.
|
| 4. In my netgear router configuration I can see the PPPoE but it is not
set
| on this one. Instead it is using PPPoA in the encapsulation settings. I
| tried to change it to PPPoE to see if this will help but we cannot get
| internet or remote access.
|
| Please advise for further settings at your end.
|
| Thanks
|

| Manisha

Hello Terence,

Sorry for the delay. The remote access is working on PPPOE but I have error
messages 20111,20180 & 20186. My symantec automatic liveupdate has stopped
working as the internet connection goes on the broadband connection and it
tries to dial the settings I have typed in the PPPoE but fails.

WRT to your solution proposed below:

The default gateway is the IP address of the
router. - DO I NEED TO USE THE SAME IP ADDRESS RANGE AS THAT ON THE SERVER
LOCAL AREA NETWORK FOR E.G 192.168.0.1 AND THE NETWORK CONNECTION
192.168.0.2? OR MUST IT BE A DIFFERENT RANGE OF IP ADDRESS?

Please note that here we do not use the PPPOE protocol and only PPPOA is
used.

Can you please let me know how to proceed further.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Kind regards
Manisha

Hello Manisha,

Thank you for kind reply.

After analyze the error log 20111, 20180 and 20186, I suggest we try the
following steps to see if we can resolve this issue:

1. Ensure the VPN client only select PPTP protocol:

a. To open an existing connection, click Start, click Control Panel, click
Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
b. Click the connection, and then click Change settings of this connection.
On the Networking tab, you can change the type of secure protocol, please
ensure select PPTP VPN.

2. On SBS, at a command prompt, type the following commands pressing ENTER
after each command:
net stop policyagent
net start policyagent
net stop remoteaccess
net start remoteaccess

Meanwhile, as you mentioned: DO I NEED TO USE THE SAME IP ADDRESS RANGE AS
THAT ON THE SERVER LOCAL AREA NETWORK FOR E.G 192.168.0.1 AND THE NETWORK
CONNECTION 192.168.0.2? OR MUST IT BE A DIFFERENT RANGE OF IP ADDRESS?

Yes, you have to use the same IP address range on your SBS as the router's
internal interface. For example, If your router's internal interface IP
address is 192.168.0.1 and mask is 255.255.255.0, you have to set the SBS
IP address as the 192.168.0.2 or 192.168.0.10, and the mask is
255.255.255.0. The default gateway of SBS must be 192.168.0.1.

If we can not resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
kindly help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Run command "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig_sbs.txt" and "route print >
c:\route_sbs.txt" on SBS when the VPN connection is established, send the
files c:\ipconfig_sbs.txt and c:\route_sbs.txt to me at
v-

2. Run command "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig_client.txt" and "route print >
c:\route_client.txt" on remote VPN client when the VPN connection is
established, send the files c:\ipconfig_client.txt and c:\route_client.txt
to me at v-

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| Hello Terence,
|
| Sorry for the delay. The remote access is working on PPPOE but I have
error
| messages 20111,20180 & 20186. My symantec automatic liveupdate has
stopped
| working as the internet connection goes on the broadband connection and
it
| tries to dial the settings I have typed in the PPPoE but fails.
|
| WRT to your solution proposed below:
|
|
|
| IP address, and then type the IP address and the subnet mask in
accordance
| with the router settings. The default gateway is the IP address of the
| router. - DO I NEED TO USE THE SAME IP ADDRESS RANGE AS THAT ON THE
SERVER
| LOCAL AREA NETWORK FOR E.G 192.168.0.1 AND THE NETWORK CONNECTION
| 192.168.0.2? OR MUST IT BE A DIFFERENT RANGE OF IP ADDRESS?
|
| Please note that here we do not use the PPPOE protocol and only PPPOA is
| used.
|
| Can you please let me know how to proceed further.
|
| Thanking you in anticipation.
|
| Kind regards
| Manisha
