Remote Assistance and Messenger 5.1 and Live Messenger

I recently updated my Windows Messenger to 5.1, since lately I was getting a
weird message telling me that my contacts had a version different than mine
and I had to update my messenger.

The weird thing was that I was using Live Messenger, and the update was for
Windows Messenger.

Now I don't have any functionality like Remote Assistance, I get the message
that my contact accepted the invitation (or that I accepted, either way) but
nothing happens then.

I already checked the settings on the "System Properties" and everything
seems to be OK.

So I was wondering, what happened? can I reinstall remote assistance? or do
I need to do a repair installation of Windows?

Hi Coolling,

The problem is that Windows Messenger is starting up, in place of
Windows Live Messenger. Both can exist in the same operating system,
however, only one can be used with the same Login information. Do not
uninstall Windows Messenger. Leave it installed.

Close Windows Live Messenger and start up Windows Messenger. Click Tools
then Options. Click Preferences. Uncheck the first two options. Click OK.
Sign out and Exit Windows Messenger and now restart Windows Live Messenger.

Something like this also happens if your copy of XP is not updated (if you didn't
install the service pack or some required updates). After just downloading and
installing messenger form Microsoft to use remote assistance, I got an error
message about needing to update my version of the program. Then I remembered I
had reinstalled a long time ago without the service pack because of the issues I
was having with it. Hope this helps
