When trying to connect via remote assistance get.... 'Remote Assistance
connection could not be established because the remote host name could not
be resolved.'

Notice articles on the web say that you need to edit the invite file? How
do you get to this invite file? When user selects request remote assistance
it sends it in Windows Messenger. Where do you edit....

Hey Al,

The error message means it couldn't connect, although that's pretty obvious.

You can't edit the invite files for Windows [Live] Messenger's Remote Assistance -- what
they're referring to there is when you create an remote assistance invitation directly from
the Start menu, Help and Support window. Just editing it won't help you either, if you're in
a situation where you're using a router (or other similar network device) unless you
specifically set it up first. For instance, that 192.168.1.1 in the IP of the sample you
pasted, would be an internal IP and couldn't be reached by someone on the internet.

However, Messenger actually has a way to get around this problem -- Universal Plug and Play
(UPnP). However, in order for UPnP to work, your router must support it and have it engaged.
With UPnP on, it will automatically create an invitation with the correct IP and forward the
necessary ports for you.

If you're still having problems, you could try out something like Microsoft SharedView which
doesn't require direct connections like Remote Assistance:
