remote desktop assistant

I don't know if this is the Wright group but I couldn't find a better one to
ask my question.

I have tried to set up remote desktop assistant between two pc in different
parts of the country
Mine is an HP note book running Vista Home Premium 64.
The pc Id like to connect to is running XP pro 32.
I can get remote desktop to work fine but not the assistant.
Iv looked everywhere to solve the problem.
I have on my end a Linksys router and Motorola DSL modem
on the other end is cable modem and router (don't know the brand or model)
to get remote desktop to work I had to give the other pc a static IP and
forward a port on the router
But none of that worked to get the assistant working.
I think it has something to do with the IP if the pc being hidden or
different with in the local network verses the internet.
Is there any way to get it working?
I have some experience but I'm not an expert.

If both computers have access to the internet use 'this
