I have set up a new Vista Business PC for a user who will access it remotely
from an XP machine as part of a transition phase to Vista. It works very
well, except I want to be able to shut it down remotely but am only offered
log off and lock from the start menu. Please advise what needs to be done to
enable the remote user to shut down the Vista PC. It is running without a
monitor and is just used via remote access at present so remote shut down is
very useful.

Thanks

you should be able to shut it down from the task manager.

There are freeware programs that can do this. You may need to have wake
up on lan enabled to turn it back on though. Handy if you need to
access your computer when on holiday. I will not advise you which one
to use because the applications differ.

While remotely connected, you should see an option for Windows Security in
your Start Menu (right above the Logoff/Lock). If you choose that, it will
take you to the Lock/Log Off/Change Password/Task Manager screen. In the
lower right hand corner is a Red On/Off button, which will allow you to
restart, shutdown, or sleep. Another way to get to that screen is to hit
Ctrl-Alt-End. Hope that helps!
