Remote Desktop stops working after Windows Update installs latest updates
automatically applied last night. I can no longer remote desktop to a machine
which was applied the following updates.

KB896727
KB893756
KB899591
KB899587
KB899588

I get the following error message:

"The system cannot log you on due to the following error: The RPC server is
unavailable."

Does anyone know what I can do to get Remote Desktop back? What is the
workaround? For the time being, I uninstalled the updates.

P.S - The OS is Windows 2003 Server.

Thanks!

Johnny

Have you checked to see if the RPC server is available? <eg>

E.g. in a cmd window enter:

sc qc rpcss
and
sc queryex rpcss

I have the same issue come up. I installed these updates:

KB896727
KB893756
KB899591
KB899587
KB899588

and the same thing happened, no rdc. Another symptom of one of these
updates is printing. This is a print erver and once these updates were
installed no one could print through the server any longer.

Removing all these updates solved both problems. I did not check the
RPC service while these were installed to tell if it was effected by
the update and I cannot now since it is production. I will try to post
the state of RPC after installing these updates once again but not
until the weekend.

Anyone else have this issue and know exactly which update caused the
problem?

TIA-
Phil
