Remote Wipe Not working in Root Domain

I have a root and child domain structure. I can find all my mailboxes in my
child domain (where Exchange physically resides) but I cannot find any
mailboxes in my root domain and thus cannot wipe root domain phones. I get
the following error:

"Could not locate the specified mailbox, verify that you entered the correct
mailbox name"

Ideas?
