Remove/hide Search Window?

For those of us who will never, or rarely, use the search
window in WLM, is there a way to hide it?

Suggestions appreciated.

I don't have a search window. I don't remember if I ever did, or how I got
rid of it if I did.

Hi, CW.

Why do you persist in using WM to post questions about WLM in this
newsgroup, which is dedicated to WLM?

Some of your questions suggest that you are confusing the two programs.
Such as this one. WLM does not have a Search window; maybe WM does, but I
haven't used that in over a year so I've forgotten. And the question in
your other post is equally misguided:
> For those of us who will never, or rarely, use the "Add Email" line in
> WLM, is there a way to hide or remove it?

There is no such line in WLM. If you were running the program you are
complaining about, we would not have to tell you these things. :>(

I have used WM for a couple of years, and am in the process
of examining WLM. I have downloaded it, and am beginning to
use it. Although my earlier questions were posted using WM,
they were about WLM issues.

I agree one might read it that way, but that is not the
case.

Perhaps "Search Window" is not the proper term; however,
near the top of my WLM screen (both in Mail and in
Newsgroups) there is a window/bar/rectangle which on the
left side says: "Find a message" and then, after a couple of
inches of space, there is the small magnifying glass icon
that is often shown with search windows. So, whatever that
is called, that is what I'd like to hide.

Perhaps we have different screens on our versions of WLM.
On mine, on the left hand side of the screen, below the last
mail folder, and in a different color, is the line saying
"Add e-mail account". That is the line I'd like to hide.

I'm sorry to have disturbed you. In fact I am running WLM
(I'm even posting this from it this time) and I am seeing on
my screen the items I'm raising. It may be that the version
of WLM I'm using is a later version than yours, since I just
downloaded this within the past 72 hours.

I welcome further dialog on ways, if any, to hide more of
the options/windows/lines that I'll never or rarely use.

'Window' does have a special meaning in the Windows environment, so it's
not surprising that you were misunderstood. The 'Find a message' box you
refer to is called a 'word-wheel', I believe, and is an extremely quick and
efficient way of locating a particular message if you learn to use it
properly. Although many people have asked for the possibility to remove or
hide it, it can't be done.

You will agree, I hope, that 'Add Email' and 'Add e-mail account' are
fundamentally different phrases, so again, your question invited
misunderstanding. Again, the answer is the same - it can't be done.

The latest publicly available version is the one you have - build 8089
issued on 26 July this year. I'm sure RC has the same - it just doesn't
have 'search windows' or 'Add Email' lines.

As others have told you, WYSIWYG. The best advice I can give is 'learn to
live with it'. You'll soon find that you don't notice the elements that you
never use, even though they seem to stick out just now. Try out the
different ways of configuring the screen - Reading pane to the side, at the
bottom or hidden; single- or multiple-line view in the Message list;
compact or expanded Folder pane view; Show/hide read messages; Sort by
date/subject, view by conversation... There are so many permutations that
it should be possible for everyone to arrive at a UI they can live with and
learn to love.

Actually, at the bottom of the Folders pane, just above the icon bar for
email, contacts, news, etc., there is an "Add e-mail account" line. AFAIK,
that can't be removed, or hidden.

I believe the five icons are arranged vertically after a default install,
but there is a way to change them to a horizontal arrangement:

"Mail", "Calendar", "Contacts", "Feeds", and "Newsgroups" show up in the
tool tips when hovering the mouse.

OK. But it did confuse me - and make me wonder if you were looking at the
WM interface. And I had just been trying to help another user who persisted
in posting with the Communities GUI interface while asking about WLM - and
there too many non-sequiturs to count. :>(

Ah, yes. The "word wheel" - which seems to me a strange name for that
window. I actually find the word wheel quite useful and don't want to
delete it - and don't think it can be deleted.

OK. I misunderstood for two reasons. First was because of the missing word
"account", as Noel suggested: "that 'Add Email' and 'Add e-mail account'
are fundamentally different phrases". Second was because I was reading your
newsgroup post in News mode, not Mail. That line now reads, "Add newsgroup
account". When I click the Mail icon just below that, WLM switches to the
Mail mode and that line changes to "Add e-mail account", as you said. And,
as Norman pointed out, we can gain more real estate in that pane by
switching those icons to a horizontal arrangement.

Perhaps I got "disturbed" too easily and responded too harshly, and I
apologize for that.

This is the right place for WLM dialog. Many of us have gripes about WLM's
pastel interface and other "features".

Apology accepted fully.

That aside, I do appreciate your input on the various topics
(in response to my questions, and those of others). I know
I can learn a lot in these newsgroups, and I'm sure I speak
for many others who give thanks to all the MVPs who share
their expertise here.

Best regards.
