I downloaded a game and the download placed a game icon on my desktop. After
I played the game I deleated the game and removed the program from my PC
without any problems. However the icon remained on my desktop and I went to
the help section and found instructions on how to remove icons from my
desktop by going to my "Personalization" and clicked on the left pane and got
the change desktop window but the game icon was not there. Now I have an icon
for the game on my desktop and don't know how to remove it. I even tried to
click on the icon and drag it to the trash bin icon but I get a notice popup
that said the file cannot be found (I supposed thats because I deleted the
program from my PC). How to I get this icon off my PC DESKTOP? Any help
greatly appreciated.....

Hi,

Right-click on your Desktop, and select 'Refresh'. The offending icon
should then be gone.

I have the same problem, I installed the "phoenix RC demo", and then
unninstalled it from add remove programs, unfortunately its left a shrtcut
behind on the desktop.

it doesnt vanish if I refresh the desktop, and if I click on it, or select
it in any way, explorer hangs. So I cant delete it, or at least not directly.

further, its not in my desktop folder under c:\users\me\desktop, so I cant
delete it from there either!

Anyone have any ideas?
I'd prefer to be rid of the dead icon.

I had a problem like yours with an icon I made myself for a program by
right-clicking the executable itself and using the "Send To ..." to put
it on the desktop. When I uninstalled the program it left the icon on
the desktop. I couldn't remove it no matter what I did. I just kept
getting told by Vista 'I can't find this program; it must have been
moved; boo hoo'.

What finally got rid of it (don't laugh) was to right-click it and
choose "Add to whatever_the_icons_name_was.zip". When it tried to add
to a ZIP file, the ZIP processor told me 'why are you here? I can't
find anything to ZIP'. As soon as I clicked the OK from that dialog
box, the desktop icon disappeared!

I have NO idea if this will work for you, but since that time I have
successfully deleted several orphan desktop icons.

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you guys mentioning creating a
zip file out of the icon, and then deleting it. Let me tell you what
happened. I dragged a video file over from my camcorder, and my system
crashed. When I rebooted, I had an icon for the video file that said 0
bytes and could not delete it for anything. My system kept crashing
every minute or so after this happened. You talk about a pain in the
a(#! I tried various programs, doing a safe boot, using deletion
programs, but nothing worked. Then I tried Winrar, and right clicked and
created a zip file and checked off the "delete file after archiving,"
and guess what? After the file was compressed (even though it said there
was 0 bytes, there was 350mb of compressed data), it deleted that damn
icon, and my system no longer crashed...like i said, that comment about
archiving it and deleting the file saved myself from having to take this
thing in and have someone else delete it for me...thanks!
