Remove IE icon and restore originals

I'm sure this has been asked before but I'm new: How do I prevent XP from
converting icons associated with Favorites I save to the generic IE icon and
icons for programs I download to the generic Windows folder icon? And, once
XP has done so, how do I restore the original icons?

It is not an XP problem.

Favicons are only temporary until cleared from your cache.
To make them permanent:
