Removing All traces of a failed DC / DNS Server

Hi,

I have manually removed a failed DC / DNS server from AD. I followed the
relevant MS Kb documents to carry out the procedure and everything seemed to
be removed apart from when I look in DNS I found that in the ForestDNSzones
and DomainDNSZones _sites still contain reference to the old site that was
successfully removed from my root domain when I ran ntdsutil. So I manually
removed the sites from the ForestDNSZones and DomainDNSZones in the DNS
management console as well as the host records that pointed to the old DNS
server.

As a final check I used ADSIEDIT to check that everything had removed
properly but I still find lots of data pointing to the old domain controller,
global catalogue, old site and old zone. My question is how can I properly
remove all remenants of the old DC, GC, Site, Zone? Is it simply a matter of
muanaully deleting the entries from within ADSIEDIT?

Old DC is called PXAWMDC
IP address is 10.226.208.73
Old Site is Paraxylene

Data in ADSIEDIT is as follows: -

Hello ba_baracus,

So you followed all steps included in:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555846/en-us

In the DNS you have to remove all information regarding the old server, normally
it should only be the servername form the zone properties, Name server tab.

Best regards

yes that is the article I followed. But in ADSIEDit I still see reference to
the old site.

If all that you are worried about is the old site, did you simply delete the site in Sites and Services?

yes I already removed the site from sites and services. What concerns me is
that I have followed all of the MS kb articles to the Letter and still there
are remenants of the old DC, site etc floating around in AD. e.g: -

Name: DC=_kerberos._tcp.Paraxylene._sites.dc
Class: dnsNode
Distinguished Name:
DC=_kerberos._tcp.Paraxylene._sites.dc,DC=_msdcs.t eesside.plant.local,CN=MicrosoftDNS,DC=ForestDnsZo nes,DC=teesside,DC=plant,DC=local

Run the MetaData Cleanup procedure in the following article to see if you can find the reference. If it's there, remove it.

I have already followed that KB to the letter and the data still remains.
