Removing Duplicate Hardware?

I've got some USB devices that I plug in as needed, for example: "Motorola
Modem". If I unplug, and plug in again, they get redetected, then
enumerated: so now I have Motorola Modem (2). If I repeat, I get Motorola
Modem (2). This is a real PITA.

It's not just modems (which are relatively easy to remove in Control Panel),
so is there a way to remove the duplicates? Can I stop this behavior?
