Removing files after successful installation of SP2

I understood during the installation that Windows was saving current
settings to allow a return to SP1 in case of problems. I assumed that it was
like upgrading from 95 to 98. If that's so, then where are the files
located? I presume it is safe to remove them, since I've had SP2 for several
weeks and obviously everything is working well.

You should see a folder(s) under \Windows starting with \$NTUninstall#####.
The #### are numbers refering to the update. The SP2 upgrade removed all the
SP1 and subsequent from Add or Remove Programs but left the folders behind
in case you reverted back from SP2.

If you have no desire/reason to uninstall SP2 then they can all be deleted.

Thanks for the info. If the files are "deleted," shouldn't their paths be
taken out of the registry too?

Thanks for the information. Maybe you can tell me what the folder $hf_mig$ is
for. It was listed prior to the uninstall folders.

Also your link for "Saving Space After installing Updates" was helpful. It
mentioned removing "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" but that is
just one of the files and small. What about the rest of the folder?

Thanks for your time,

sdipi

Description of the contents of Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 software update
packages
Describes the "$hf_mig$" folder - leave it alone.

You need to leave the C:Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder itself but if
you're worried about space
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en
See the above article on cleaning the Download Folder and Datastore folder.I only
have 17 meg in the download folder. It's up to you.
