I have a partitioned hard drive, and Windows XP is on the C: drive. I
wanted to try out Vista, so I installed it on the D: drive. Now I'd
like to remove it from my computer. Is there a "right" way to do
this? If I were to just delete the Windows folder (in the D: drive)
while XP is running, what would happen?

You would have removed Vista off your computer...(better to format that
partition).........but its boot files would still be on the C drive and you
would still get the dual boot screen.
So you would insert your XP Cd and enter the recovery console.......then in
the dos prompt type..fixboot and then fix mbr and then bootcfg/rebuild

That would be fixmbr and bootcfg /rebuild (which should not be necessary
as the boot.ini should be okay)

As John says, you should not need the bootcfg /rebuild command.

1.Backup, backup, backup
2. Reboot and Boot to your XP CD-ROM
3. Start the Recovery Console
4. Run Fixboot
5. Run fixmbr to reset the master boot record
6. Exit the Recovery Console
7. Reboot
8. To remove the extra entry, edit the boot.ini file to remove the
"Microsoft Windows Longhorn" entry.
9. Format Your Vista Partition
