I want to rename
<myname>/Desktop/Linux_Mag_Bugs.eml
to
<myname>/Desktop/Bugs.txt
A right click on the icon does not
give me the opportunity to change
the suffix.

Question: How can you change a file suffix?

Are you talking about the way that the filename itself is highlighted
but the extension isn't? That's just a matter of pressing the arrow
keys and moving from the filename to the extension, you can then rename
it to anything you like.

- if that made zero sense then you must be talking about something else.

In order to change the suffix (extension) of a file, you need to show it
first by going to:
1. Explorer (My Computer)
2. Click on *Tools*
3. Then *Folder Options*
4. In the *View *tab uncheck the *Hide extensions for known file types

*Then try to go to rename your file again.

Hope this will help!

Perhaps I should have been explicit.
If I right click on an icon to change the suffix
from *.eml to *.txt, the suffix is not visible.
My HP dv6000 laptop is running Vista Premium.
Lukan suggested arrow keys. No combination of arrow
key and control key and shift key and alt key
accesses the suffix.

So, before you right-click on the icon, did you see the suffix?

Have you tried my option?

I cannot find explorer (my computer)
I cannot find "my computer"
I believe I read somewhere that "pictures"
and "my pictures" are the same thing.
In any case, explorer is not listed
under start. explorer *is* almost listed
under Start>Accessories>Windows Explorer but
this version has no *tools*.

I know where control panel is located
Start > Control Panel
Can I get there from Control Panel?

There are icons on my screen (desktop).
The icons have titles listed below each
of them. The titles are file names *without*
suffixes.

Start > Control Panel > Folder Options

Folder Options makes *no* mention of suffixes.

Control Panel (Classic view) > Folder Options > VIEW TAB > uncheck "Hide
extensions for known file types" (second item from the bottom of the Advanced
settings window).

Lukan,
It has taking me at least two hours to find this, but
the arrow key only works if the extension is visible.

Lengleng,
Before I can do step #1 (above) I had to find Explorer.
Somebody else on this forum gave me the clue.
Windows Key + e => Explorer Window

While in the Explorer Window, the ALT key reveals
(and hides) another menu bar...
File Edit View Tools Help

At this point, your instructions are good.
Thank you,
