Renaming server effects shares?

Hi,

I'm in the midle of a server migration. I have an old fileserver (server1)
and the new server (server1-new). I have migrated the data to the new server
and am waiting to move the shares until I get some clarity.

I'm using secure copy to move the shares to the new server. Once that is
done I will rename the old server to "server1-old) and rename the new server
to "server1" and give it the same IP address of the old server.

My question is that If I rename both servers will I lose the share that have
been configured?

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for your post.

<My question is that If I rename both servers will I lose the share that
have
been configured?>

No, server rename will not cause 'Share Permission lost'. Server rename
process is about DNS or WINS records, and has nothing to do with share
permission. So, you don't need to worry about it.

The following information might be not related to the your question, but I
think it would be helpful to successfully accomplish file server migration
and benefit other members who are planning or doing the same project. So, I
list here for your reference:

In order to keep share permission of files during file server migration,
normally, you can use the following tools:

<1>File Server Migration Toolkit:
=======================
FSMT helps the system administrator easily migrate shared folders from
servers running Windows NT? Server 4.0 or the Windows 2000 family of
servers, to a server running Windows Server 2003 or Windows Storage Server
2003.

You can download this tool from here:

Microsoft File Server Migration Toolkit 1.0:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...eae-930a-42b0-
b595-66f462f5d87b&DisplayLang=en

For more details about this tool, please refer to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...ocs/msfsc.mspx

<2> Permcopy.exe
===================
You may use another resource kit tool Permcopy.exe to copy share
permissions from one existing share to another like this:

permcopy \\SourceComputer SourceShare \\TargetComputer TargetShare.

To keep consistency of UNC paths
========================
To keep consistency of UNC paths, we can rename the new file serve as old
server. alternatively, we can create Alias record on DNS for the new file
server

We can remove old server and create a Alias record for the new file server,
so that the end-users will not be aware of file serve changing.

How to create a DNS Alias record, please refer to:

Creating a DNS Alias Record
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/168322/en-us

Also, please have a look at the following KB article to avoid possible
error caused by alias record.

Connecting to SMB share on a Windows 2000-based computer or a Windows
Server 2003-based computer may not work with an alias name
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;281308

Hope this helps. Have a nice day.

Sincerely
