repair install staying at 39 minutes...

Hi there,

I'm trying to do a "repair" install on a machine with XP home. It goes so
far and installs the files normally from the CD, then when it comes to the
bootup and goes into starting up Windows and stays at the "Setup will
complete in approxiamately 39 minutes" with the green buttons down to the
"installing windows" button.

It's been like this for over an hour now, I've tried the repair install a
2nd time and still the same.

The mouse moves around normally, no frozen windows, just not moving along.

What can I do to get the installation moving along?

Otherwise my guess is some hardware is causing problems.
Disconnect all peripherals such as printer, camera, scanner etc.

Hi Harry,

Okay, what led to this was the task bar not coming up, and the windows
shutdown window would pop up soon after bootup saying something about RPC
call requiring a shutdown.

Then I hurriedly went into services.msc and the icons were missing in the
extended side of services but the icons were on the standard tab. But when
going into properties of each service (trying to disable RPC) there were all
dimmed out.

Hence the re-install.

Any ideas?

Hi Gordon,

It may be to do with a similar problem I had - check if you have a
SVCHOST file (no extension) in your windows\system32 directory. If you
have delete it - mine was a zero byte file. DONT delete the
svchost.exe file though.

I have no idea how it got there.

BTW - to get to a command prompt during the install use SHIFT+F10

Hi Gordon,
It looks like the system is not updated with any Service packs... becoz I
used to get this problem when my system did not have any service packs.
Though this is not the forum to discuss about third party tools I recommend
you to run the AVG Free antivirus. On my system when I ran the AVG for the
first time it showed me that a virus/worm was present in the
<system%drive>/Windows/system32/ folder. Once I updated my system with
service pack 1A the problem was gone. Tryout and let me know....

And regarding that repair staying at 39 minutes, as far as I suspect it
might be a problem with the disc you are using/with the optical drive.
