Repair .NET Framework on Vista?

Hi all,

I am an ASP.NET Web Application developer having trouble with the .NET
framework on Vista Ultimate. I am getting errors trying to run my Web
application only on my Vista Ultimate machine at home. The errors indicate a
corrupt version of the .NET 2.0 framework.

I have been seaching MSDN amd the Micorosoft KB and have not yet found a
solution to repair the framework on Vista.

I must say that Vista has been a real pain for MS Development partners. I am
keeping all the workstations at the office (except for one) running Windows
XP until Vista becomes a reliable development platform.

I repeat...my applications run on all other machines except the one I have
at home. They even run fine on the one Vista machine at the office.

1. Is there an article that shows clearly how to repair the framework on
Vista?
2. Must Vista be reinstalled to do so? If that is the case, can I do a
repair install such that I do not lose all my installed applications that I
use for development?

Maybe a MS Tech can chime in on this one?

Thanks for your help

I may be way off base here but can't you just remove it in add and
remove programs and then just reinstall it from MS site?

I've had the same problem, but not as a developer. One of my programs
won't run, but brings up an error message to say that .NET Framework 2.0
needs to be installed. When I download it and try to install it, I get
the message that it's already part of my OS. (I'm running Vista Home
Premium X64). I've checked, and all the relevant files and folders seem
to be there, but the OS isn't recognising .NET Framework 2.0.

That means I can't do as gls858 suggests, as it doesn't appear on the
Uninstall program list.

Very frustrating. I'd love to know how to fix the problem, which seems
to be the same as John K is experiencing.

You might want to try tis MSoft URL dealing with cleaning and reinstalling
..net framework. I've not yet tried it, but am about to.

If you notice, under the entry for .NET 2.0 the Vista operating system is not
listed. The geniuses as MS don't have a solution for the problem.

I've decide to become a Java programmer and buy a MAC.

Have a good day Microsoft.

Thanks. That looks as though it will help. When I get a bit of time,
I'll pour myself a long drink and then go through the whole sequence.
Hopefully, it's going to be worth the trouble and won't lead me further
into strife.

If you have Vista on your machine, try what you suggested. Go to the Programs
in Control Panel and if you see .NET Framework 2.0 click on it and just look
at your choices. Mine are only Change and Repair. When I click Repair it asks
me for the installation CD. I put the original Vista DVD in the drive and it
can't find the file it needs (the instructions are to put the original
installation CD/DVD in the drive). I am guessing it can't find the file it
needs because it is wrapped up in a compressed file somewhere. But Vista's
crappy "search" utility (way worse than XP) even in Advanced mode won't allow
you to search "compressed" files. What a laugher!

That just gave me an idea. I will go to my trusty XP secondary machine and
use the XP search to find the file I am looking for. In my opinion MS dumbed
down Vista to be more usable by the casual user. It looks to me like they
dumbed it down period.

Hello John

In my case, I can't simply do an uninstall/reinstall, as .NET 2.0 isn't
in the list of programs - even though I know the files are there.
Somewhere, some time ago, I found a list on the MS website of the files
and folders associated with .NET 2.0, so I was able to verify that it is
there. (It would take me a while to find the URL again for that
particular reference, but it's out there somewhere).

I'm wondering therefore whether my problem isn't so much that the
relevant file is inside a compressed file, but rather that there's
something amiss in the registry settings.

spdah my friend,

If you think the problem may be related to the registry take a look at this
link:

http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...ows-vista.aspx

The steps that he outlines might be worth a try.

However, note the last line in the original blog post. I quote:

"Unfortunately, there is not an easy way of repairing the registry
keys/values that are installed by Windows Vista like there is for files. If
you want to try to repair the registry keys/values that are a part of the
..NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0, you will need to run Windows Vista OS setup again
and repair the OS. "

I have not had time to try an OS repair yet. Maybe on Christmas day.
Repairing the OS from the original installation CDs or DVDs night require you
to then run Windows Update to re-install the necessary service packs. Happy
Holidays :-)
