unfortunately that usually isn't possible.
the recovery CD/DVD will return the machine to the way it left the factory.
if it is an actual VISTA DVD, you can boot from the DVD and run the repair
function.
if it is a recovery DVD you may have the option to do a destructive or 'non'
destructive install.
with the way Vista is messed up, even a non destructive recovery many times
destroys files.
if possible, back up whatever you want to save before attempting a repair.
