Repairing Windows

Did a repair of windows xp because windows was not starting from a cold boot.
After repairing I tried to download updates. They downloaded but would not
install. Installed windows installer 3.1 and tried again, but still to no
avail.

Use Wordpad and open & look at the Windows Update log file
C:\WINNT\WindowsUpdate.log

(note your Windows folder may be at \Windows)

Scroll down all the way. You are looking for entries marked "Error" such as 0x......... (where ...... are numbers)
