Repairs - missed updates during & after system crash

I am running Win. XP Home edition without Vista. On 12/9/06 I downloaded some
registry software which was supposed to clean the registry. I don't know much
about computers and I never touch the registry myself. Anyway, my system
completely crashed during the download and I lost everything. I had to
reinstall two system restore disks that came with the computer and I was back
4 years ago. I had thought I had made more recent back ups but discovered
those disks made using the Microsoft software included on the system were
missing a lot of information and, therefore useless.
I always used automatic update and set it for overnight, so I often don't
see the error messages if something doesn't work. I recently used Belarc
advisor and the Microsoft update page to look back at what updates I am
missing. I have more than 25 downloads that did not install. I am now
running IE 6. In Add/Remove programs is listed Windows Installer 3.1,
Service Pack 2, .NET Framework 1.1 and .NET Framework 2.2. All of them show
that they have NO size. Through investigation and the Belarc report I can see
that I have no Malicious Software Removal tool, No Win Server 2003, no
Virtual Machine, no Remote Desktop Connection Terminal, No Internet
Information Services, and who knows what else. As of 12/13, I started
watching the updates. Waiting to download now are MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security
Update (KB927978), (925672) and .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1. These 3
downloads state they have no size and no time required to install. Of course
they always fail. On 12/10, (under the Belarc listing SP3) the updates
started successfully loading again. Apparently anything that doesn't require
one of the many downloads that I am missing will successfully install.
I have tried my best to go back to the beginning and manually install.
Windows Update Agent and SMS Inventory Tool said they were unsuccessful
because Windows Installer must be installed. It's the same story for
everything that needs to be downloaded. The error messages say that I cannot
complete the install because it requires one of these other files that is
missing. I tried to start with the oldest update 1st, but there seems to be
no order to this.
Please help. I do not mess with the registry, so if you send me there you
have to give me VERY specific instructions. Even worse, please don't make me
wipe everything and start back again 4 years ago. That was a horrible
experience. I'm lucky to have gotten back into my system at all. Sorry this
was so long but there was a lot of info and no way to make it shorter. Thank
You. Dawn

Well Dawn, what can I say, it's a mess.

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer - may assist in regard to updates.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec...2/default.mspx

This is the WI you need
Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Personally, I think I would start over. Retrieve all my data, and begin again.

Good luck.

The "Windows Installer Service Could Not Be Accessed" Error Message appears When You Add
or Remove Program - 1719
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;315346
Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. You may be running in
safe mode or Windows Installer may not be correctly installed.
Dawn, you may need to re-register the installer.

This should give you an idea of what is missing -
From Microsoft - Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.

| Thank you for trying. When I try to download either I get the message that
| the Windows installer cannot be accessed because I am either in safe mode (I
| know I'm not) or it was installed incorrectly. I will try to look for it and
| uninstall any part of it that might be on here. The big question is: if I
| did start all over wouldn't I be in the same position and how would I know
| where to start? How do I know what updates or not are on my four year old
| restore disks and which are required before others can be installed?

A similar situation is not exactly the same. Please start a new thread detailing what your
problems are, what operating system you are using and what has led you to this particular
problem.
