Repeated Automatic Updates

I recently allowed installation of automatic updates to Windows XP
Professional. Now, the SAME automatic updates announce their availability
(yellow shield icon) almost immediately thereafter. These updates attempt to
self-install with every shutdown. Onbly solution seems to be to disable
automatic updates altogether. Any ideas?

You could try the following :
net stop wuauserv
Then delete the contents of your C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution folder.
net start wuauserv

now try shut down , if you still get offered the same updates even on
windows update site but other updates install without issue , download the
offending updates from www.microsoft.com/downloads , try install them now.

If you still suffer , well hehe , I'd have to charge you for extra support .

I went to C:\windows\softwaredistribution folder. There are many folders
within this folder. Do you really mean for me to delete these sub-folders?

When I went to C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution there were many sub folders.
Are you really suggesting to delete all these folders?

It has been a few years since the original post , if you only have a single
update repeatedly offering to install , take down the KB#### and search for
that update via http://www.microsoft.com/downloads

Try and install that single update manually , if you get any errors with the
manual download , that should help you troubleshoot the actual error
preventing the update from installing.

Alternatively you can upload the errors here , and I am sure the community
will try and help.
