On Windows 2000 Professional SP4

The security update KB819696 (something to do with ActiveX) has been
installed, in theory successfully on my machine repeatedly by both the auto
update and myself by going to the Windows update site.

It has now "successfully" installed this update thirty-five (!) times since
May 28th.

I have searched both this discussion group and in general but I can't see
any evidence of anyone experiencing the same same issue.

So is there any way to get rid of this?

Just to add to this.

There are a few posts that talk about this problem on XP. Does the registry
fix listed here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319109 apply to me?

And since it is mentioned both in that thread and the other thread I would
say that my copy of Windows is legal and other updates have installed
succcessfully during this time period. It is just the one update that is
failing.... well not failing it says it is successful but it keeps doing it
over and over.

Yes. Remove the Registry key that pertains to that update, then
re-install the update.

You should probably also examine your system for 3rd party apps that
would prevent updating the Registry. Since this update relates to
DirectX (not ActiveX as you mentioned in the earlier post) you should
verify that no DirectX items are running when applying the update.
Last, you may want to manually download/install DirectX 9.0c:
