Hi. Some time ago I applied update KB931784, and it shows up in my "Add or
Remove Programs List." But my computer continuously says I need to install
it, and when I do, it just repeats that I need to install it. When I go to
the Windows Update site itself, it too says I need to install it, and it does
this no matter how many times I install it. The only way I can stop is to
make this a hidden update. What is going on here? I am concerned that
somehow the update is not taking. Thanks for any help. Sanford.

I have the exact same problem with .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1.

Suggest you use the steps on this page to remove .NET Framework 1.1:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...10/502439.aspx

Then download a fresh copy of it from the link on the above page and
SAVE it.
Download .NET Framework SP1 from the above page and SAVE it.
Then download the update from here and SAVE it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

After the downloads have been completed close the browser and any other
open programs.
DISCONNECT the system from the internet if it's on broadband.

*** Completely disable the installed antivirus software either by
reading the product's Help file or by consulting it's web site. ***

Install .NET Framework 1.1
Restart the system if requested to
Install .NET Framework SP1
Restart the system if requested to
Now install KB928366 [ NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86.exe ]
Restart the system if requested to

REENABLE the installed antivirus software and then reconnect the system
to the internet.

Do you remember the KB929338 install looping threads? The very same
applies to KB931784 too - like *all* kernel updates BTW.

So, what to do to get it fixed?

Try downloading the update manually via DownloadCenter:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...D=eeaee4a7-485...

*Save* the file to a folder your harddisk (let me call it "C:\Downloads"),
do *not* execute it from within your browser.

Afterwards type the following under "Run" in the Start menu:
"C:\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB9231784-x86-ENU.exe" /o

The parameter "/o" (o like overwriteOEM) should do the trick for you.
Note the blank between the last quote sign and the parameter /o!

Bye,
Freudi
