Repeated reinstallations of KB954430

I have Windows XP, service pack 3. For the past few weeks I keep seeing that
a security update for Security update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0
Service Pack 2 (KB954430) is failing to install. When I called in to
Microsoft, I encountered a half hour wait and a 49 min. conversation with
someone who told me to rename msxml4.dll to msxml4.dllold. He then hung up,
stating I should call him back if it didn't work. It didn't work, but I
didn't have that kind of time to try again.

I noticed that the article referring to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927978/ (previous version of Security update
for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0) also had similar issues trying to
install. The current msxml4.dll file I now have is version 4.10.9404.0, for
MSXML 4.0 SP 1. Why isn't SP2 instaling?

Thanks

Have you tried downloading the update from the Microsoft Download Center, and
then installing it manually while booted to Safe Mode?

Harry.

Harry,
No, I haven't tried that. It's been a long time since I used safe mode -
could you please refresh my memory as to how to get there? Was it F8? F5?
And, just so I don't get more confused (I have had a brain injury and what
used to come easily is now just so much harder) - would you mind listing the
steps to exactly what I should do?

Thanks,
Confused as usual!

Download the installer here:

<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=96a4413c-5261-4f69-83d0-932c430abd14>

Reboot the computer. Press F8 just before Windows starts up. (It usually takes
me a few tries to get this right.)

When the boot menu comes up, choose "Safe Mode".

Once the system has booted, run the installer you downloaded in the first step.
Hopefully it will run properly.

Reboot the computer again and allow it to boot normally.

Let us know whether this works or not.

Harry.

I've encountered this issue on some of my clients as well.

On most clients simply renaming or deleting the MSXML4.DLL and allowing the
installation to recreate it works. On a few, I had to download and install
the update manually and install after the rename/delete.

But, on at least two machines, the problem persisted even then. So I tried
to isntall the update in safe mode, but the update threw an exception that
said it could not be isntalled in safe mode.

Instead, I uninstalled the update in safe mode, rebooted and re-installed
the update again in normal mode also ensuring that the MSXML4.DLL was renamed
or deleted. This seems to have cleared up the problem.
