Repeatedly Installing same software

I noticed recently that when I visit Microsoft Update the same updates are
there to install. Each time it goes through the motions of installing the
software with no error messages, and even says at the end that the updates
were successfully installed, but the next time I go back there the same
updates are waiting to be installed again.

Automatic Updates also repeatedly tries to install this same update. The
update in question is an update for Microsoft Silverlight. I have also
noticed that Windows Live Software downloads will no longer install failing
with error code 0x80096010.

Thanks.

Windows version?

A1. Uninstall Silverlight via Add/Remove Programs or Installed Programs,
reboot, then install a fresh copy via a newly downloaded installer.

A2. If you're referring to updates for Windows Live applications, uninstall
them, too, then install a fresh copy.

I tried that but Silverlight now refuses to install at all. I get referred to
this page when I click "More Information"
http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight...x?errorID=1500 also
the same update is still being repeatedly offered to me through Microsoft
Update & Automatic Updates.

Thanks for your assistance.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

I tried this, and next time round it said Installation failed and gave me an
error code, which I looked up, and the fix for that was to repeat as you said
but deleting the contents of the DataStore folder. Then I tried again and the
installation completed, but its still offering me that download, and
silverlight content does not work.

Now if I look in Update history I have error code 0x20 by that update.

Thanks for your assistance so far

Have you tried downloading Silverlight and installing it by hand?

Yes, as I stated in an earlier post I get an "installation failed" error, and
when I click more information it gives me error code 1500.
