Repeatedly Offered an Update, KR 910339

To stop a repeating XP update, I applied the steps outlined in KR 910339.
The status was green (update installed), found no viruses after a scan,
downloaded the update, but could not install it in the standby mode. A
message said you can't install from the standby mode.

Any suggestions? It looks like it's a registry problem which I can't handle
without help. Can an MSV suggest to MS that they need to make a fix for
Windows Update
to adddress all the problems people are having?
